Using Propecia to Fight Hair Loss

Propecia logo

Propecia is the first and only FDA-approved pill demonstrated to treat male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head). There is not sufficient evidence that Propecia works for receding hairlines at the temples.Their website states that most men will begin to see results after 3 to 12 months but positive results will begin to dissipate after 12 months of non-use. If you use the product for 12 months or more with no positive results, then it is likely that Propecia does not work for you.

Propecia uses the active ingredient Finasteride, and it works to stop the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is also used to help shrink the size of the prostate gland in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The drug is taken in pill form and is to be used only by men. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not come in contact with broken tablets. Because it is known to cause birth defects in male babies, Propecia has been put in the FDA pregnancy category X.

Another thing to be careful of is liver disease or liver problems. If this is a problem you have, a consultation with your doctor is recommended as you may need a lower dosage or special attention during use of Propecia. Of course, we recommend discussing Propecia with your doctor before use, as it is difficult to be aware of all of the possible side effects that may affect you during use.

In FDA reviewed tests, 2 out of 3 patients using Propecia regrew or maintained the current hair they had while the patients taking no treatment continued to lose their hair. The Propecia site states that you generally cannot grow back all of the hair you have lost, but may be able to grow some back and stop current balding in its tracks. Propecia has many side effects and problems to be wary of but it can show positive results.

The Propecia website is much more open than that of Rogaine in letting you know that it does not work for everyone but that it has been proven to work. It shows the positive aspects but also outlines all of the health risks as well.
